Venerable

Today's word is "venerable" ... Commanding respect because of great age. (Dictionary.com)

Lucky
She showed me how to turn a hem,
and sew evenly around,
so that the stitches wouldn't show
and the garment would be bound.

She made apples sweet with sugar brown,
and fritters on the New Eve,
a sandwich with two kinds of bread,
all my hunger to relieve.

He watched baseball by the hour,
and peeled apples into curls.
I watched them fall into the bowl,
by the fireplace unfurled.

Grandparents of the sternest kind,
yet filled with love and care,
I venerate in my old age,
as people wise and rare.
