Cheeseparing ... Float

Today’s word is “cheeseparing” ... meanly economical; parsimonious; stingy. (Dictionary.com)

Float
So many wonderful things to do,
So many things to see,
That’s why we have vacation,
So we can relax and just be.

This is no time for cheeseparing,
Or saving for a rainy day,
This is the time to explore all things,
To roam and test and play.

There are plenty of hours to work,
Til exhaustion makes you weak,
Parting from this to make memories,
Is also a goal to seek.

Zeugma ... Broken

Today’s word is “zeugma” ... the use of word to modify or govern two or more words when it is appropriate to only one of them or is appropriate to each but in different way, as in On his fishing trip, he caught three trout and a cold.”  (Dictionary.com)

Broken
Two meanings at the same time,
Is politician speak,
Like a zeugma there’s confusion,
Sometimes logic that is weak.

We truly want to trust them,
Believe they want the best,
But they turn their ideas ‘round,
And do not act at our behest.

We cannot trust mere humans,
With our souls or with our minds,
But must look for God’s hand,
So we do not travel blind.

Polyglot ... Towering

Today’s word is “polyglot” ... person who speaks, writes, or reads number of languages. (Dictionary.com)

Towering
He was up on the eightieth floor
     looking over the countryside,
He watched all the other workers,
      Climbing, stretching, pounding nails,
            Carrying stones. Following instructions.
The tower was coming along beautifully;
they were in the clouds already.
But suddenly there was a rumbling,
     shaking and screaming.
The men began to yell at each other,
     “What’s happening?” Stones fell.
“Over here!” “Bring a bucket!”
      “Where are the nails?”
“What? What are you saying?”
     “I don’t understand.”
The workers began climbing down.

Once at the bottom confusion reigned.
There was no polyglot among them.
            This was something new.
Finally, sadly, they began to walk away
      from their more-than-human dream.
They would have ruled the sky.

They took their families and wandered off
      in all directions,
Wondering what in the world they would do
with a life without the tower.
On their way, as they passed the site of
the calamity, each family picked up a few
bricks in case they had need of them later.

Darg ... Warm

Today’s word is “darg” ... day's work. (Dictionary.com)

Warm
Palm trees sway in Florida,
Sunshine outlines shadowed lanes,
People on bicycles and on foot,
Along the roadway reign.

They have escaped the darg,
The drag of dull routine,
Now they float in a happy daze,
One with the tropic scene.

They’ll return home at a later day,
With tales of sand and sea,
With a shell or two and memories,
Of days that were carefree.

Decussate ... Hug

Today’s word is “decussate” ... in the form of an X; crossed; intersected. (Dictionary.com)

Hug
So many things are difficult,
We have decussate aims,
But no matter how we subdivide,
We are not all the same.

The things that are defining,
Are inside our human skin,
Kindness and true honesty,
Keep us from greater sin.

The love we show to others,
Grace in the face of hate,
God’s family united,
Is a better fate.

Today’s word is “pharaonic” ... impressively or overwhelmingly large, luxurious, etc. (Dictionary.com)

Horizon
Pharaonic mansions on the beach,
All of which are out of reach,
For the average sand walker,
Who gazes at them like a stalker.

But then they turn toward the waves,
And standing outwardly do gaze,
The rich and poor take in the sun,
Which round them all around does run.

Rueful ... Sorry

Yesterday’s word was “rueful” ... feeling, showing, or expressing sorrow or pity (Dictionary.com) Driving from Michigan to Kentucky, I completely forgot to write!

Sorry
Rueful and sad the penitents come,
Broken and humbled by what they have done,
Looking for the forgiveness they themselves cannot give,
The forgiveness it takes to get well and live.

They leave with rejoicing although they know,
Soon or late they’ll be back through that door,
Imperfect humanity keeps them in this condition,
‘Til they realize the cost of remission.

We have no perfection, present, future or past,
Only grace that will cover us all when we ask,
So go forth with joy into your next day,
Knowing you’re loved, even though you will stray.

Prosopopoiea ... Look!

Today’s word is “prosopopoiea” ... personification, as of inanimate things. (Dictionary.com)

Look!
If the table legs could run,
And hurricanes could see,
A toothy comb could smile at you,
And waves come from the sea.

Happy trees could clap their hands,
And the stones cry out,
All of God’s amazing world,
Would dance and sing and shout.

It seems this prosopopoiea,
Brings to us a new light,
Firing imagination,
Enhancing mere eyesight.

More
Ah the sweet treats,
And how we celebrate,
But then our weight,
We have to recalibrate.

Paczki and chocolates,
Breads, cookies and pies,
For every occasion,
No one knows why.

Treats make us happy,
And sassy and cared for,
I think that maybe,
That’s what they’re there for!

Proclamation ... Land

Today’s word is “proclamation” ... a public and official announcement. (Dictionary.com)

Land
In imagination,
This kingdom would be best,
If the king proclaimed,
We are better than the rest.

Because his word is gold,
And full of truth and light,
Every tiny utterance,
Is surely good and right.

Or is there room for more,
An independent thought,
Which has on occasion,
A greater country wrought?

Join
Sometimes it seems we’re all alone,
Slogging through this world of woe,
We want to be free to work and play,
More often, we just want to go.

No more rules, no more restrictions,
No more masks and separation,
Just real camaraderie of spirit,
And a feeling of elation.

But for now we set our minds,
On surviving one more day,
Praying for an intervention,
Which will finally ease our way.

Lunisolar ... Cycles

Today’s word is “lunisolar” ... to or based upon the relations or joint action of the moon and the sun. (Dictionary.com)

Cycles
We track the days and months,
With lunisolar ease,
The phases of the moon and such,
The sun doing what it pleases.

We are at their whim,
So far they have been kind,
Giving us exactly what we need,
So say our smartest minds.

We do not need to stress or strain,
To keep Earth on its course,
Everything’s been finely tuned,
From the beginning, by the Source.

Parlous ... Freeze

Today’s word is “parlous” ... perilous; dangerous. (Dictionary.com)

Freeze
The cold gets deeper; parlous,
How did this mini-ice age come?
Makes me want to run south,
‘Til this season is all done.

Imagine sunshine every day,
And beaches warmed by tides,
Warm breezes filled with sweetness,
And palm trees whispered sighs.

Sometimes the grass is greener,
In a warmer clime,
And crossing there brings pleasure,
Even for a shortened time.

Meritocracy ...Work

Today’s word is “meritocracy” ... system in which person's progress is based on ability and talent rather than class privilege and wealth. (Dictionary.com)

Work
If only our minds and hearts,
Were our true, good measure,
We soon would realize,
The blessing of this treasure.

This simple meritocracy,
Would allow to rise,
Those whose work and talent,
Are the winds by which they fly.

It is all within,
Grit and determination,
The eye that’s on the prize,
Sees the way to celebration.

Plashy ... Later

Today’s word is “plushy” ... marshy; wet. (Dictionary.com)

Later
These are the freezing days,
Wind and snow and ice,
When a cozy fireside,
Is close to paradise.

But what is even better,
Is to look ahead and smile,
To coming plashy April days,
Which will with warmth beguile.

Then in my daydream daze,
Flowers raise their heads,
And I know this frozen land,
Will become beautiful instead.
