Peplum

Today’s word: “peplum” A short skirt attached to a blouse. In ancient Greece, a tunic. It can both conceal imperfections or reveal contrasts of a figure.

Observation

Weighing our world from behind sunglasses,
            wrapped in the latest fashion,
hands on the wheel of an SUV,
                                    we live without want,
                                                or wish we could …

Maybe if we act as if our world is fine,
it will be; and the truth of our lives
will match our imagination. And no one will see
the brokenness disguised like peplum-covered flaws
                        on an uneven frame.

In this illusion of unassailable perfection,
            we hide from ourselves,
from each other and from God (we think),
the very things, that when revealed
                                                make us most alike.
Perhaps, someday soon we’ll see ourselves reflected
in the other, and recognize our common need
                        for compassion and forgiveness.
