Phantasmagoric

Today's word in "phantasmagoric" ... having a fantastic or deceptive appearance.

Hallow
Some nights are made for fantasy ...
A full orange moon speckled with bat silhouettes,
leaves dancing 'round costumed children,
the smell of smoke wafting house to house.
Phantasmagoric shapes running from treat to treat,
happily sampling along the way.
It doesn't last long, this frenzied feeding,
except in memories of childhood gone by.
Still, spirits linger, in dreams of night and day,
acting as if they have weight and can
change our world of substance solid.
We know better, yet turn and look behind us
just in case we are mistaken. In these moments,
it's good to remember whose we are and
to whom we trust our souls.
