Plod
Soldiers and sailors courageously go,
To war scarred places where we close our eyes,
Doing the things that we don’t want to know,
Gaining fame they often view with surprise.
Obstacles great; traumas laden with shame,
Beset humans on each square inch of earth,
We applaud; we hear they’ve overcome pain,
Amazed and humbled at their extreme worth.
Mountains are climbed; books are written and shared,
Faces on screens are known well and proclaimed,
Fame and success are cheered on and compared,
The doers and makers win all their games.
But, for all whose days groundhog-like repeat,
To war scarred places where we close our eyes,
Doing the things that we don’t want to know,
Gaining fame they often view with surprise.
But, for all whose days groundhog-like repeat,
Those hours too shine, valorous, complete.
