Dipththong ... Speak

Today’s word is “dipththong” ... an unsegmentable, gliding speech sound varying continuously in phonetic quality but held to be a single sound or phoneme, as the oi- sound of toy or boil. (Dictionary.com)

Speak

English has its mysteries,

Like a dipththong’s sound,

Why a comma goes just so,

Or what parenthesis surround.

That we can speak and understand,

Is a wonder of its own,

But that written words communicate,

Is a miracle that’s unknown.

Every book and every story,

Each communique,

Allows our thoughts to travel,

Around and through us every day.

We grope for words and phrases,

To explain our deepest thoughts,

The broken trail of history,

Is what our words have wrought.
