Woke ... Up

Today’s word is “woke” ... woke ... Slang. actively aware of systemic injustices and prejudices, especially those related to civil and human rights. (Dictionary.com)

Up

Have you noticed the moon,

     as it slides behind its cloud bank,

         shining like a child’s flashlight 

              under a blanket?

Did you see the first star tonight, blinking bright?

Have you seen acorns falling like rain?

     or the first fall leaf as it metamorphosed,

          green to red?

Have you listened to the birds as they greet the day,

     before the first blink of light?

Have you felt the hand of a trusting child in yours?

     Or smelled a baby’s hair? Or wondered at the wisdom

          In an elder’s eyes?

Have you felt, within yourself, something more?

     If you have. You are woke.
