Flummoxed ... Dig

Today’s word is “flummoxed” ... utterly bewildered, confused, or puzzled. (Dictionary.com)

Dig
He put the statement under
     a microscope.
He was flummoxed by its difficulty,
but sure in his intentions ...
          positive that he could find
               the innuendo that he knew
                     was hidden there.
Or some wayward noun or sordid
verb that was waiting to ambush
          the unsuspecting reader.
An unwelcome meaning that might cause
     unending sadness.
A bit of history that might disturb
by its lack of modern sensibilities.
He turned it upside down and sideways.
     It wrinkled under his hand.
But he was relentless. He finally discovered
     a comma that offended.
He ran outside shouting and pointing,
     “An eraser! An eraser!”
