He was flummoxed by its difficulty,
but sure in his intentions ...
positive that he could find
the innuendo that he knew
was hidden there.
Or some wayward noun or sordid
verb that was waiting to ambush
the unsuspecting reader.
An unwelcome meaning that might cause
unending sadness.
A bit of history that might disturb
by its lack of modern sensibilities.
He turned it upside down and sideways.
It wrinkled under his hand.
But he was relentless. He finally discovered
a comma that offended.
He ran outside shouting and pointing,
“An eraser! An eraser!”
