Alone
We watched them clamber over hills,
Over boulders wet with rain,
Through deep vines and fallen trees,
As they fought exhausting pain.
They strained to prove survival skills,
Their toughness and their fortitude,
But they found their minds no match,
For unrelenting solitude.
What stopped them wasn’t simply hunger,
Beastly cries or constant cold,
But the lack of human comfort,
Which keeps us going; makes us bold.
