Hermitage ... Hidden

Today’s word is “hermitage” ... hur-mi-tij ... any secluded place of residence or habitation; retreat; hideaway. (Dictionary.com)

Hidden
The cavern is deep and damp.
Stalagmites slowly rise from
the limestone floor,
stalactites descend drip by
drip from the ceiling of this
strange cathedral.

But it is home and hermitage.
Dark-winged bats hang in community,
singing their songs to each other
in secret language and sign.

Water seeps through stunned rock.
Rivers run. Blind fish swim.
Salamanders shyly creep.

All this happens without our help.
Without our knowledge.
Under our feet. A world apart.

Do not touch the walls!
They are alive.
